This Master of Science by Research thesis explores blood management strategies regarding hip and knee joint replacement surgery. I begin my work by exploring the background to why this is important, with a history of transfusion and joint replacement surgery. I then examine the evidence behind blood management strategies in arthroplasty and identify areas where the evidence is lacking. I present my two papers published and accepted for publication. I finish with a discussion of the limitations and what I learnt from my work. Including in the appendix is work I was involved in regarding blood management in joint replacement surgery but this was not my own original work so was not included within the main section of this text.
