This thesis examines the Russian Constitution 1993 and the legislation flowing from it against the background of the former (Soviet) constitutions and international human rights instruments at the beginning of Russia’s path towards democratization. Research for the thesis was conducted over a period of four years (1998 - 2002) during particular political and economic instability in the country following the financial crisis of 17 August 1998.
