When it comes to wellbeing, what are the pros and cons of working in an office vs from home?

Research output: Contribution to journalOnline ResourceProfessional

Abstract

This professional online article, published in The Conversation, examines the wellbeing implications of office-based, remote, and hybrid work arrangements in the context of ongoing return-to-office tensions. Drawing on international labour statistics and recent empirical studies, it explores shifts in work patterns following the COVID-19 pandemic, including the stabilisation of hybrid work adoption and persistent differences in employer and employee preferences. The article synthesises evidence on productivity, retention, and job satisfaction, highlighting that hybrid work is often associated with improved employee outcomes, including lower attrition and comparable productivity to in-person arrangements.

The discussion considers the advantages of in-person work for informal learning, collaboration, and social connection, alongside the benefits of remote work for inclusion, accessibility, and sensory regulation, particularly for neurodivergent employees. It also addresses the growing prevalence and organisational impact of workplace loneliness across both remote and on-site settings, with implications for engagement and turnover. The article argues that return-to-office policies should be implemented with sensitivity to employee wellbeing, emphasising gradual transitions, environmental design considerations, and flexible arrangements. It concludes that effective workplace strategy requires evidence-based, individualised approaches that balance productivity, inclusion, and psychological wellbeing in hybrid work environments.
