Abstract

Bees lived among other animals for more than 100 Mio years. During
that time, they developed solutions to certain challenges. Evolution programmed
precise behavioural patterns into their brains, which must have been highly
successful, as bees continued to exist till today. In this paper the different
challenges bees are facing, and the solutions bees have developed to deal with
those challenges were identified. Those solutions then were used to find solutions for companies to cope with the challenges they are facing in the area of opening-up their innovation processes. This was achieved by mapping the challenges bees are facing to the challenges companies are facing in opening-up their innovation process and applying the solutions the bees have developed on the corresponding challenges of the companies. The result is a portfolio of measure that will help SMEs to cope with their challenges. Measures which are not based on the experiences of consultants but on solutions developed by nature in 100 Mio years.
