Abstract
Disease awareness campaigns are designed by interest groups to highlight the existence, detection, and treatment of diseases. They aim to influence public knowledge and may be a valuable health information resource. Campaigns like “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and “Movember” (for men’s health) get substantial exposure, while those targeting rarer conditions are less known. Many are officially recognized and promoted by government, public health, and research institutions, with such endorsement frequently highlighted in campaigns. Many campaigns are supported by entities with financial interests, although the frequency of support is unknown. This study assessed the content and funding of disease awareness campaign websites recognized by major noncommercial institutions.
