Abstract
[Extract]
Themes of violence are commonplace in all forms of media. The daily news is
riddled with stories of murder, death, and destruction. Television and cinema are
constantly pushing the boundaries of acceptable depravity. Popular video games
allow players to inflict violent acts on other gamers through online multiplayer experiences, and music with lyrics that describe rape and murder is readily accessible through online platforms such as Spotify and YouTube. Exposure to violent media has the potential to desensitize people to violence and normalize its existence in society. It is not surprising, therefore, that research on the psychology of media violence has spent a great deal of resources investigating how exposure to such violence affects how people think, feel, and behave. In this chapter, we will discuss one of the most understudied domains of media violence: music with violent themes.
