Abstract
Technological development since the dawn of the “space age” in 1957 has given rise to many new and exciting opportunities. However, the current international legal and governance framework, largely developed in a very different era (the 1960s and 1980s) from the present, is now being challenged as to its ability to provide the certainty, standards and safeguards needed to appropriately address specific uses of space that have emerged with the latest space technologies. This gives rise to a number of significant challenges to current global governance with respect to the use and exploration of outer space and, in particular, humankind’s interaction with and dependence on space technology.
