Abstract

Tactical personnel (i.e., firefighters, law enforcement officers, and military personnel) have some of the most physically demanding occupations within our society. These individuals must routinely perform arduous job tasks, often in extreme or austere conditions, under potentially life-threatening situations. Consequently, attaining and maintaining a certain level of physical fitness is paramount. In this chapter, a variety of topics related to developing strength training and conditioning programs within this population will be discussed.

Chapter Objectives:
•Understand the metabolic and physiological demands of various tactical personnel across their occupational life span.
•Recognize the need for health and physical fitness testing and assessment within tactical populations.
•Identify common barriers and challenges to attaining and maintaining health and fitness for tactical personnel and within tactical workplaces.
•Design strength training and conditioning programs for tactical personnel.
