Abstract
The overarching purpose of this research is to better understand trust and control dynamics within family firms. By considering (a) how trust-building activities are applied and perceived, and (b) how these interact with control mechanisms, we claim that the importance, dynamics, and effectiveness of trust-building activities differ in family and non-family firms. Our conceptual model and distilled propositions provide avenues for future research to examine the influence of managerial intentions and subordinates’ perceptions when building trust.
