Abstract

Major depressive disorder and antidepressants can have different effects on cognition. In this chapter, we will discuss the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on basal ganglia and hippocampal-dependent cognitive functions. Specifically, the effects of MDD and SSRIs on learning and generalization will be reviewed. In addition, the influence of MDD and SSRIs on learning from positive and negative feedback will be summarized. Gaps in the literature and possible future directions will also be discussed.
