N2 - The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has opened widespread opportunities for industry implementation. As the scholarship grows along the vast growth of AI, it is important to have a general view of current research efforts. The rapid innovation driven by the IT industry raises issues on the ethical, legal, and social aspects of AI implementation. As research emerges in various directions, an overview of recent AI-related research is needed. This study adopts a systematic review approach to analyse the current state-of-the-art machine learning-based AI research. Synthesising 134 articles, this study identifies four focused research areas. It also highlights the rise of attention in human-AI relationships, especially in the AI implementation research area. The paper also underscores the importance of studying the intricate dynamic interplay between humans and AI technology. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
