Abstract

Family doctors are often involved in assisting patients with behaviour change. The 5 As framework has become the universal approach to teaching and practising the art of encouraging behaviour change (Figure 1). It is championed for its simplicity and easy-to-remember acronym. In Australia, it is applied within general practice in the prevention guidelines for smoking, nutrition, alcohol, and physical activity advice.
