Abstract
In May 2024, the EU and Australia signed an MOU to cooperate across the critical minerals sector with a declared aim of building a secure and sustainable supply chains driving the green transition. This short piece briefly explains trade and law related implications of how export controls might be used as part of a broader strategy to shore-up downstream capacity while minimising legal and geopolitical costs.
