Abstract

We report the first simultaneous measurements of pH(i), [Ca2+](i) and tension, upon alteration of pH(i), in isolated rat mesenteric arteries loaded with both carboxy SNARF and indo-1. In these vessels (pre-contracted by 30 mM KCI) alterations of pH(i), by addition and subsequent washout of weak bases, produced complicated effects on tone. Although the changes in contractility did not mirror the changes in pH(i) they were, at all times, accompanied by parallel changes in [Ca2+](i).
