Abstract

This session has been designed to help educators, trainers, and academics to design, develop and evaluate simulation-based educational resources.

Everyone involved in simulation-based education (SBE) should find these videos and developmental resources useful. Your learning in this session is consolidated through the completion of exercises and reflections contained in a downloadable and printable workbook. You may wish to use this as evidence of continued professional development (CPD). Please note in order to use the editable versions of the workbook and worksheet you will need to use the web browser Google Chrome.

The aim of this session is to provide an overview of the fundamental aspects of the design of simulation-based educational resources.

This session will:
* Introduce the National Framework for Simulation-based Education (SBE), developed by Health Education England
* Provide illustrative videos of courses and innovations in healthcare education from international experts, local education providers from healthcare organisations and Higher Education Institutions
* Introduce the Integrated Simulation and Technology-enhanced Learning (ISTEL) Design Framework to aid the design, delivery and evaluation of a short course, in-situ training session or entire curriculum
* Provide case study examples relevant to the development of SBE in healthcare
* Provide links to SBE standards and evidence-based resources.

The design toolkit includes videos and development resources including the Integrated Simulation and Technology Enhanced Learning Design Framework worksheet, example scenarios and workshop activity cards. The resources promote discussion about inclusivity, scalability and sustainability of simulation and technology enhanced learning in healthcare. Learning is consolidated through the completion of exercises and reflections contained in an editable and printable workbook, which may be used as evidence of continued professional development. The other resources that form part of the simulation faculty development resources include: Introduction to Simulation-based Education Educational Theory and Practice for Simulation-based Education Delivering Simulation-based Education Scenarios Debriefing Simulation-based Education Events An Introduction to Human Factors and Patient Safety. A project is currently underway with Trent Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and HEE's Technology Enhanced Learning Programme to pilot and evaluate the NHET-Sim faculty development programme. If successful, a full integration of this e-learning programme will be undertaken.
