Role of Social Media in Health Professions Education

Effective and safe use of social media in health professional education can represent both a process for learning and a learning outcome for learners, teachers, and scholars. Achieving these goals requires specific skills and often new approaches for effective integration of social media. 

This chapter considers health professionals’ use of social media in education - the advantages, opportunities, and pitfalls - for learners, teachers, and scholars. We will consider some contemporary challenges including quality indicators, digital scholarship, ethics, and professionalism. A series of hypothetical case vignettes give readers tangible illustrations of our content.
