Abstract
It is 1930, and Elwyn (early 20s) lives with her husband Alaric (early 30s) in an isolated farmhouse on a sugar cane farm that the bank wants to repossess. Elwyn is a determined, courageous, but troubled young woman. A soon-to-be young mother, she is excited about the imminent birth of her firstborn.
Elwyn’s baby is born on a wild, thundery night, but her joy is short-lived. That very night, a demon claims her baby's life. Overcome by grief and guilt, Elwyn's past traumas are triggered. Through carefully positioned flashbacks, we learn that Elwyn’s grandmother, Morgana, was the High Priestess of the cult of Lamashtu, an ancient Babylonian demon. As a young girl, Elwyn was drugged by Morgana and presented as the ‘honoured offering’ in the cult’s harrowing rituals. When Elwyn was a teenager, she ran away from home to escape the destructive power of her demon-worshipping grandmother, leaving her younger sister behind. Several years later, Elwyn learns of Morgana’s death, and not long after, her mother takes her own life.
After the baby’s death, the demon begins a relentless supernatural attack on Elwyn through the evil apparition of Morgana’s spirit. Initially, Elwyn struggles to make sense of these unnatural occurrences, unaware of the demon’s evil intentions. However, as more strange visions, hauntings, and inexplicable incidents persist, Elwyn’s grip on reality slips away. Tormented by her past and feeling trapped by her family’s curse, she becomes convinced that tragedy is inescapable. Alaric, a WWI veteran who has seen the effects of psychological suffering in the trenches of Gallipoli, believes that it is the trauma of their baby’s death that is tearing Elwyn’s mind apart. Desperate to help his wife, Alaric brings Elwyn’s estranged younger sister, Celeste, to the farm. But as the demon’s power increases, Elwyn must confront the traumatic memories of her past and battle the demon’s extraordinary powers to stay alive.
