Abstract

To the Editor: In their excellent article Tall and Small1 cite normal high-density lipoprotein cholesterol values given by Fredrickson et al.2 The authors’ Table 1 gives an impression that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol is rather constant from birth to death in both men and women. However, it increases during the first year of life,3 as does total serum cholesterol.4,5 According to Hardell, the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level of cord blood is approximately 0.75 mmol per liter (1 mmol per liter = 38.7 mg per deciliter), and at one year, the level is 1.24 mmol. We measured levels5 from cord blood.
