Abstract

Outback Musical is a 43-minute observational documentary that takes the audience into the lives of children from outback Queensland as they prepare for one of the world’s most unusual musicals, while telling a deeper story about young people discovering themselves in isolation, the impacts of drought and disability, and the power of creativity. Outback Musical is a rare complex, multi-faceted and joyful depiction of life in rural Australia, which challenges stereotypes about the value of the arts for remote communities.
After running in two parts on ABC Landline, Outback Musical was commissioned as a standalone documentary for iView and YouTube, and replayed on ABC Appointment TV.
