Abstract

Host communities play important roles in tourism development, and their involvement is critical to the success of sustainable tourism. In the context of Lombok, Indonesia, this research analyses the obstacles to host community participation in tourism development. Four different respondent groups were involved in the study: Firstly was a group of people who lived in a village which was located within a developed tourist destination in Lombok. Secondly was a group of people who lived in a village which was located within a less developed tourist destination. Thirdly was a group of people who lived in a village which was located outside of tourist destination, and fourthly was a group of Mataram university students who lived within a tourist destination. Qualitative research methods were employed (Neuman, 2008; Sarantakos, 2005).
