Abstract
‘NT Schools in Crisis’ is a series of investigative reports which unearthed a $214 million funding gap in Northern Territory schools, leaving some classrooms without power, water or full-time access to qualified teachers. The series investigated a funding system that has been called ‘systemic racism’ because it concentrates underfunding in disadvantaged schools, in ways some say amounts to a human rights violation. The series (30,000+ words of reporting in the form of 20 news and feature stories, 100+ photos and 5 videos) was published in The Australian/The Weekend Australian over a 10-day period. It also explored the relationship between education, crime, health and housing.
The series won a Walkley Award and five NT Media Awards.
