Abstract

This chapter introduces the concepts of motivational interviewing for the treatment of substance use disorder. We here assume that people have an intrinsic motivation that can lead them to make positive life changes. This chapter shows how motivational interviewing methods can increase motivation in drug addicts so that they take steps toward successful recovery. Further, the motivational enhancement therapy (MET) assumes that motivation is key to effective treatment as well as motivation is a dynamic state that can be modified. We here discuss methods for counselors and clinicians to consider while conducting MET for the treatment of drug addiction.
