Abstract
Iron, an essential element, is involved in a wide variety of functions including
oxygen transport, cell proliferation, DNA synthesis, and energy metabolism.
Imbalances in iron metabolism can negatively impact these functions. Approximately 1.2 billion people globally are affected by iron-deficiency anaemia,
iron deficiency without anaemia is at least twice as common.
