Abstract

In late 2023, the Council of Australian Law Deans (CALD) released its report, ‘Reimagining the Professional Regulation of Australian Legal Education’, authored by Sally Kift and Kana Nakano. The report offered a detailed analysis of the regulation of legal education in Australia and in a global context, and of the various drivers for regulatory reform. 2023 also saw the beginning of a national conversation about the future of Australian legal education, with representatives from each of legal education’s peak bodies coming together to examine the current state of legal education in Australia and identify opportunities for reform. In this chapter, CALD co-Chair Professor Nick James and CALD Vice-Chair Legal Education Professor Tania Leiman present a comprehensive history of these initiatives and their current status, with reflections on the ways they might impact upon efforts to protect and enhance the wellbeing of law students and legal practitioners.
