Abstract

Introduction:
Electronic prescribing is also known as Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE).
It is a computer-aided system which offers the health professionals a robust platform
for entering the prescription electronically. In a developing country like Pakistan where
patient to doctor ratio is very high there is a need to implement such systems which
could help in minimizing the potential medication errors.

Methods:
It is a survey study regarding patient related benefits of CPOE as perceived by the
health professionals. Data was collected from four major cities of Punjab. Response
rate was slight above 50%. Data was analyzed in MS Excel.

Results:
The advantages of CPOE are summarized here in the form of multiple bar graphs. The
graphs clearly indicate that the most of the participants are in favor of achieving these
benefits by adopting CPOE.

Discussion:
Ultimate goal of all this system is to improve the quality of health services and improve
quality of life at large. Overall response is very convincing indicating strong motivation
for the use of CPOE among the healthcare professionals. The results call for an action
to implementation of CPOE. Lack of infrastructure as well as political will might be the
major factors impeding the adoption and implementation of this system in Pakistan.
