Abstract
Companies operating in different industries exhibited different financial characteristics due to facing different market conditions and economic and competitive pressures. These financial characteristics acted like fingerprints, allowing the identification of the industries in which these companies operated, using the eleven Global Industry Classification Standards (GICS) sectors.
