In Search of a Useful Theory of Family Business

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperResearchpeer-review

Abstract

Families and businesses evolve. Families transition; businesses transform. Fundamental to this process is trust and loyalty among family members and business stakeholders. Our research strengthens understanding of multi-generational family businesses by introducing a heterodox-economics-rooted perspective of family business adapted from Nelson and Winter’s (1982) Lamarckian-inspired evolutionary theory of the firm. We add contextual richness by demonstrating how a third-generation business-owning family are concurrently orchestrating their generational transition and business transformation.
