Abstract
Population ageing is a global phenomenon, demonstrated in the growing proportion of people aged 65 years or older. According to the United Nations (2017), older people already outnumbered children under the age of 5 years for the first time in 2018. The two key drivers of this trend are a decrease in mortality over the lifespan, due largely to improvements in modern medicine, and reductions in fertility, leading to a relatively smaller proportion of the population in the younger age group. The social and cultural impact of population ageing is considerable and impacts on ability to maintain adequate access to nutritious food in the older age group (United Nations 2017).
