Abstract
This chapter outlines theories on how and why music elicits emotional responses. Psychological models are emphasized, reflecting the rapid expansion of research on the psychological basis of music. Questions addressed include: What is the relation between the emotions we perceive to be expressed by music, and our felt experiences while listening to music? Which structural attributes of music carry emotional meaning, and what mechanisms do they trigger? Do people from all cultures perceive and experience emotions as they listen to music? By considering existing research on these and other questions, the chapter provides a comprehensive account of the psychological basis of the connection between music and emotion.
