Abstract

[Extract]
As an academic (and clinician), I have now spent more than 15 years conducting clinical trials in the area of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Once the strangest-looking stress reduction technique with little robust evidence for its effectiveness, EFT has become an emerging area of international interest, backed by quality research. In this article I want to share my thoughts about how this research can enhance your work. When I first started out, our understanding of how EFT worked focused on the body’s meridian and energy system. While there may be some truth to this, the concept was not well accepted in mainstream sectors. Clinical trials have now advanced our understanding of the effects of EFT, and allowed us to focus our research on these effects, rather than focusing on theoretical questions around energy systems. We have come to understand that EFT has profound effects on the nervous system, the production of stress hormones (particularly cortisol), DNA regulation, and brain activation. The research that has led us here has also made EFT more acceptable in the academic community, as it has built a bridge to what
was already acknowledged.
