Gaming more than just a youthful armchair pastime, esports is gearing up for a massive Olympics future

Research output: Contribution to journalNewspaper ArticleProfessional

Abstract

Esports, once seen as a youthful pastime, is gaining significant momentum and recognition in the global sports community, with potential inclusion in the Olympic Games by 2026. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken steps to integrate esports, such as hosting the Esports Forum in Lausanne and launching the Olympic Virtual Series. Despite challenges like aligning esports with Olympic values and managing viewership, the growing popularity and substantial viewership among younger audiences highlight its potential. Australia, though lacking a dedicated esports strategy, has a large esports audience and generates significant revenue from the sector. Initiatives like The Fuse Cup and partnerships with schools show esports' expanding presence. Future integration into the Olympics requires careful consideration, but the proactive stance of the IOC and collaborations with the esports community indicate a promising future for esports on the Australian national stage.
