Abstract
Phrasing is an essential component in both speech and music. In speech, phrasing helps to divide the continuous acoustic signal into meaningful chunks of information. In music, phrasing divides the melody into structural subunits. An important cue for phrase boundaries in both speech and music is a change in
stimulus duration. In this study, we used the closure positive shirt (CPS) event-related potential (ERP) to investigate adults‟ processing of phrase boundaries in both speech and music which were cued by changes in duration. The results revealed a similar CPS response in both speech and music. This suggests common processes in perceiving phrase boundaries in speech and music.
