Abstract

In 2010, the International Obesity Taskforce (IOTF) estimated that approximately 1 billion adults worldwide were overweight, with an addition 475 million obese. Among school-aged children, overweight and obesity are estimated to affect approximately 200 million children. This chapter will review the rapidly changing prevalence of child overweight and obesity, variations in the prevalence of child obesity, key environmental determinants affecting youth eating and activity behaviors, and the health, social, and economic impact of the burden of obesity in young people.
