Abstract
Aim: To identify if endoscopic bariatric procedures impact on quality of life and mental health.
Methods: This systematic review retrieved studies in any language from EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed from database inception to October 2019. Eligible studies included adults >18 years who underwent an endoscopic bariatric procedure and reported pre‐ and post‐procedural quality of life and/or mental health. Data were pooled and analysed via meta‐analysis. Studies were quality assessed via GRADE.
Results: Twenty studies were included; the majority were intragastric balloon procedures (n = 12) and with females (77% total participants). Nine intragastric balloon studies were meta‐analysed for quality of life (n = 389 total participants) and five for mental health (n = 225 total participants). Intragastric balloon was found to largely improve quality of life (SMD: 0.85; 95%CI: 0.69‐1.02 P < 0.00001; I2: 7%; GRADE: low) and moderately improve mental health (SMD: 0.86; 95%CI: 0.29‐1.42; P = 0.003; I2 = 92%; GRADE: low). All studies displayed a decrease in weight and an association between the amount of weight lost and mental health changes was detected.
Conclusions: Endoscopic bariatric procedures may improve quality of life and mental health alongside weight loss. Further studies exploring effects of other endoscopic bariatric procedures on quality of life and mental health are required.
