Chapter 12 surveys the impact of COVID-19 on high performance athletes and coaches, with a specific focus on Olympic athletes. The chapter examines how athletes and coaches have been impacted from a training and competition perspective whilst also analysing the consequences for their physical and mental health, career development and financial security.

The objective of this chapter is to examine the impact of COVID-19 on high-performance athletes and coaches. Global examples will emphasize the challenges faced by Olympic, Paralympic and professional athletes and their coaches. Specifically, for high-performance athletes and coaches,
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on training, competition, physical and mental health, career aspirations and financial security. While lockdowns globally have produced challenges for athletes, coaches and support staff, resilience, flexibility and adaptability of athletes and coaches emerged in these challenging times. Many countries are still experiencing lockdowns and restrictions, competitions are still postponed and we are no closer to seeing the end of COVID-19. As sport managers, we must reflect on what have we learnt during this pandemic, and what we can do better to prepare and manage our athletes and coaches through future challenges as they arise.
