[Extract]
The objective of this chapter is to examine the impact of COVID-19 on high-performance athletes and coaches. Global examples will emphasize the challenges faced by Olympic, Paralympic and professional athletes and their coaches. Specifically, for high-performance athletes and coaches,
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on training, competition, physical and mental health, career aspirations and financial security. While lockdowns globally have produced challenges for athletes, coaches and support staff, resilience, flexibility and adaptability of athletes and coaches emerged in these challenging times. Many countries are still experiencing lockdowns and restrictions, competitions are still postponed and we are no closer to seeing the end of COVID-19. As sport managers, we must reflect on what have we learnt during this pandemic, and what we can do better to prepare and manage our athletes and coaches through future challenges as they arise.

This chapter examines the impact of COVID-19 on high-performance athletes and coaches, and specifically provides an understanding of how athletes and coaches have managed training, competition (or lack of), physical and mental health, career pressures and financial wellbeing. The chapter includes insights from industry practitioners as well as research on the social and psychological implications of the pandemic. The chapter concludes with COVID-19 sport
management implications for high-performance athletes and coaches.
