Abstract

[Extract]
Special Forces (SF) soldiers of the Australian Defense Force are continually called upon to perform physicality and mentally demanding duties in arduous and unforgiving circumstances. Although SF soldiers are often considered to be akin to elite athletes, this association can be misleading. An elite athlete participates in sports or events where competitions are typically scheduled well in advance, games and events are structured and both teams follow the same predetermined and enforced rules. SF soldiers are often required to move at short notice into unfamiliar environments( subject to intelligence limitations) and face forces that can be far superior in numbers and who are not subject to the same rules of conduct.
