Abstract

Alexithymia, as a personality construct, is typically characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing emotions, and an externally oriented thinking style. It has been found to be associated with various eating disorders, including binge eating. Individuals with alexithymia tend to have trouble distinguishing between emotions and physical sensations, struggle to recognize and understand their own feelings, and find it challenging to express emotions. This can lead to difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships, as well as coping with stress and managing emotional responses. The relationship between alexithymia and binge eating is linked to the individual’s ability to regulate emotions. Research suggests that individuals with alexithymia may engage in binge eating as a maladaptive way to cope with emotional distress, as they struggle to identify and express their emotions effectively.
