A Taxonomy of Improvement Factors for Online Learning Management Systems

Abstract

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application designed to provide educational content and to support student learning. This article investigated actions which can be employed to improve LMS through a qualitative study collecting data from 131 participants studying in one of Australian universities. A taxonomy of 8 main improvement areas were developed as a result of data analysis. These improvement areas include Training of staff and students, Improved Gradebook, Improved Lecture Recordings, Streamlined Login, Ensuring Working Links, Working Mobile Application, Frequent Updates, and Smart Notifications. Both practitioners and researchers can draw various implications from the outcomes of this study.
