Abstract

As Anthony Albanese was sworn in as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia in May 2022, promising signs emerged that the long-strained Sino-Australian relationship was beginning to recover. The Albanese government departed from the hostile stance adopted by previous administrations and actively sought to improve bilateral ties with China. Notably, in 2022–2023, China and Australia resumed high-level discussions on trade, diplomacy, and security. A key item on the agenda was the removal of trade measures previously imposed by China on Australian agricultural exports. While the process of repairing relations takes time, Australia’s exports of wheat and beef to China increased, although wine, lobster, and other agricultural commodities remained at low levels. Nevertheless, a broader reset is expected in the near future. As bilateral relations continue to improve, opportunities for deeper collaboration in agricultural trade are likely to expand.
