Abstract

During 2019 - 2020, Australian agriculture faces a number of unprecedented challenges. Agricultural production is severely affected by the persistent drought and devastating bushfires. The global outbreak of COVID-19 also casts a dark shadow over Australia's future development of farming and the agricultural economy as a whole. Even worse, a sharp deterioration of the China-Australia relations leads to tariff escalation and rising trade barriers for Australian agricultural products. This chapter identifies and analyses the economic, social, political and legal challenges facing the Australian agricultural industry. It further proposes a series of solutions to resolve the trade disputes in agriculture. This paper predicts that the two countries will eventually restore their trade relations; however, enormous efforts are required in order to make that happen.
