Abstract

In Public works in Japan, geological conditions have been treated as “unpredictable” risk and have been providing “reasons” for the design document changes. When the growing economy is being over, however, such a treatment is generating serious problems. The goal of this study is to discuss direction of new geological risk management. First, overview of the current situations of geological risk management in Public works in Japan is described, and their problems are summarized. Second, an attempt is made to propose new geological risk management approach consisting of 1) development of risk quantification method, 2) development and implementation of process management systems, and 3) introduction of geological advisor for the public client. Third, as a first step towards the development of risk quantification method, case studies are conducted. Concretely, by conducting preliminary studies, the format of collecting information on effects of geological risk management. Based on the proposed data format, an attempt is made to estimate the effects associated with geological risk management. Finally, discussions are made of future tasks to introduce and implement the new geological risk management approach.
