Nigel Barnett studied at the University of Sheffield and the University of Oxford, where he obtained his DPhil in 1995. Since moving to Australia in 1996 to take up a University of Queensland (UQ) Postdoctoral Fellowship, he has established a successful research career in the field of retinal neuroscience, with his main interest being retinal degenerative diseases. In 2003, Nigel was awarded an NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship, which he undertook at the Vision, Touch and Hearing Research Centre (UQ). He was a Senior Research Fellow at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research and Senior Scientist at the Queensland Eye Institute (QEI) before taking up the position of Associate Professor in the Clem Jones Centre for Regenerative Medicine at Bond University in 2018. He has developed productive on-going collaborations with prominent local, national and international scientists. Nigel’s research focuses on the mechanisms underlying retinal degeneration and the development of innovative therapies for diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. In particular, he is investigating potential neuroprotective strategies to mitigate vision loss in these blinding conditions. Such strategies include novel antioxidant agents and unique silk extracts. Nigel also holds Honorary positions at UQ and QEI.
