I started my work as an Associate Professor at Bond University, Abedian School of Architecture, in May 2015. Previously I held the positions of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, as well as Chair of Undergraduate Programs, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, School of Architecture. I earned my Master of Architecture and Doctor of Science (equivalent to PhD) at the Helsinki University of Technology; current Aalto University. Additionally, I pursued research studies on Japanese architecture, on the Japanese Government Mombusho scholarship, at the Tokyo National University of Arts and Music. I conducted post-doctoral research on Korean architecture, as a Korea Foundation Fellow, at the Korea University.
In addition to my dissertation thesis Structures, Symbols and Meanings: Chinese and Korean Influence on Japanese Architecture (Helsinki University of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2000/18, second edition 2002, ISBN 951-22-5013-8), my published work includes numerous articles and papers on research methodology and Asia-Pacific architecture in general, and East Asian cultures in particular. My most recent book, titled Case Study Strategies for Architects and Designers: Integrative Data Research Methods, was published by Routledge in June 2017.
Regarding research methodology, my primary paradigm is qualitative and trans-disciplinary approach, with a focus on the perception of place/ space, phenomenological 'thick descriptions,' cultural impact on and indigenous values in architectural expression, as well as critical regionalist interpretations of the built environment.
I have a long career as an Architect SAFA (Association of Finnish Architects) prior to my academic calling with built projects in Finland and China; these consist of private houses, public buildings, and historic preservation projects.
In the academe, I have taught design studios, history-theory courses, and research methods seminars, as well as various graduate level electives on my research interests, including Asia-Pacific architecture, regionalism/ critical regionalism, and architectural phenomenology.
I have also acted as a supervisor of several doctoral candidates, particularly in dissertation theses dealing with Asia and the Pacific region.
Correspondingly, I am interested in supervising:
