Background
My name is Kevin Kemp-Smith; thank you for reading this page.
I am an academic, educator, researcher and clinical educator in the School of Physiotherapy at Bond University on the Gold Coast of Australia.
I hold a Post Professional Doctorate in Science (Sc.D) focusing on Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. I have extensive clinical experience in hospitals (emergency room, intensive care, orthopedic, and infectious disease wards) and the private sector (aquatic physical therapy, general outpatient orthopedics, and private practice). My Physical Therapy and academic positions have taken me to rural and remote regions in the Hawaiian Islands, Utah, West Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. These experiences, including a five-year academic position within the School of Physiotherapy, Curtin University in Perth, West Australia, have been pivotal in shaping my research and academic interests.
My research interests are diverse, including but not limited to the following;
- Aquatic activity and mental health
- Conditioning strategies for Big Wave Surfing
- Air, land, and sea safety protocols utilised in Big Wave Surfing
- Blue Zones: determinants of longevity and healthspan
- Psychologically Informed Physiotherapy strategies
- Combating non-communicable diseases through effective education
- Utilising non-pharmacological strategies for pain and inflammation reduction in a physiotherapy context
Of current interest is work my colleagues and I are undertaking in aquatic trauma management (shark attack) and bleeding mitigation through direct arterial pressure.
