Personal profile

Research interests

My research is based in the broad fields of strategy and risk.

My PhD (University of St Andrews, UK) was a longitudinal, empirical study of a large, complex organisation's application of a scenario-informed strategic planning process. My postdoctoral research (University of Cambridge, UK) concentrated on risk, where I co-developed the Cambridge Risk Framework; a methodology which uses catastrophic event scenarios to estimate the impact on interconnected systems (e.g. financial networks, shipping networks) as a means of modelling the global socio-economic consequences.

My current strategy research is focused on the differences in inter- and intra-organisational strategizing practices, and, with Dr Ryan Parks (Mount Royal University, Canada), the role of institutional logics in the strategy process. In the risk domain, I am working with researchers from NTU (Singapore), Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge (UK), on modelling disruptions to, and assessing the resilience of, global shipping networks, and, with Dr Roxane Foulser-Piggott (University of Cambridge, UK) on the role of epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty in risk management.

My future research aims to bring together risk and strategy, conceptualising them as an inseparable duality, and proposing a framework for increasing the understanding of risk in strategic decision making.

Statement for HDR students

I am interested in hearing from potential research students with a sound theoretical and/or practical understanding of risk and/or strategy. Strategy scholars interested in analytical tools (particularly Scenario Planning) and/or sociological aspects of the discipline (e.g. S-as-P), would be particularly welcome.

Similarly, I'd welcome enquiries from risk scholars interested in uncertainty and/or governance.

Additionally, I would like to hear from students with a strong interest and/or work background in the airline and shipping industries.
