Personal profile

Research interests

I hold a PhD (Occupational Therapy) from the University of Cape Town, reading in mental health, substance use disorders, HIV and the social inclusion realities among adolescents and young adults in Zimbabwe. I am also an African Mental Health Research Initiative (AMARI) alumni. I am interested in critical social science research around mental health, psychosocial rehabilitation, social determinants of mental health and occupational science, with special interest to indigenous knowledges, decolonial science, marginalised and disadvantaged population groups.

Over the years, I have conducted and collaborated in critical social sciences, naturalistic inquiry, and participatory research, including designing, conducting and publishing evidence synthesis studies. Of note is a scoping review on conceptualisations and definitions of social inclusion and justice in mental health and HIV, which was part of my PhD. I have also collaborated and co-authored systematic reviews, focusing on psychometrics and instrument appraisals. I am interested in research focusing on community and public engagement with a special focus on marginalised population groups. To this end, I have completed a Wellcome Trust Community and Public Engagement seed fund grant. In this grant, I applied participatory action research methods whilst working with school-going youths to challenge stigma and social exclusion concerning HIV and substance use in Zimbabwe.
