Personal profile
Research interests
I am an academic general practitioner. The purpose of my teaching and research is to support clinicians get new research findings into clinical practice. So, I teach evidence-based practice and shared decision making, and research on synthesising evidence (and I am co-ordinating editor of the Cochrane Acute Respiratory Infections Group), using systematic review and meta-analysis methods, as well as primary research, using randomised trials, and observational study designs.
Specific areas of illness that I work on include acute respiratory infections, any self-limiting disease including infections, skin cancer, and antibiotic resistance, in primary care.
By 2019, I had authored >550 articles in peer-reviewed journals, (>200 scientific papers, with additional peer-refereed editorials and additional letters and comments), 5 books, and 22 book chapters. My h-index is 59 (Google Scholar), total citations 13,796, with 14 papers cited over 100 times, and 162 cited more than 10 times. I have been awarded $28m in research grant funding (78 grants), including 3 international grants totalling $373,000. I have a national and international reputation in antibiotic overprescribing in acute respiratory infections, evidence-based medicine and systematic review, and randomised controlled trials, in both clinical medicine and health services research.
Statement for HDR students
My national and international reputation is in antibiotic overprescribing in acute respiratory infections, evidence-based medicine and systematic review, along with randomised controlled trials, in both clinical medicine and health services research.
I am currently working on a $2.5m NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence award, for which I am the Chief Investigator A, addressing antibiotic resistance emanating from primary care prescribing.
