Description
Previously a sports administrator from South Australia who had just finished a term as CEO of Basketball Northern Territory, Brian Chapman moved to the Gold Coast in 1991. A running coach by background Chapman soon started his own squad but also quickly became involved in triathlon administration as secretary on the Triathlon Queensland board. By 1992 he was also in the Triathlon Australia board. Chapman remained involved in triathlon governance for most of the 1990s.
Perhaps as a result of his background in administration, Chapman maintained well organised files of Triathlon Queensland and Triathlon Australia papers. Official Triathlon Australia records from the 1990s were boxed and transferred from Triathlon Australia headquarters in Canberra to Sydney in the early 2000s due to personnel change. Unfortunately the records were destroyed through water damage following a storm. The Chapman papers thus provide the chief collection of Triathlon Australia records from the decade preceding the Sydney Olympics. Despite this, the collection is patchy, with an emphasis on Queensland in the early 1990s with most Triathlon Australia records focused on high performance in the period from 1995 to 1997.
