DescriptionA group of 416 qualitative researchers from 38 countries, led by Prof. Tanisha Jowsey of Bond University, Australia, has rejected the use of generative artificial intelligence applications in reflexive qualitative research, including reflexive thematic analysis and various phenomenological approaches.

The scholars, in a “global declaration rejecting GenAI,” said their decision was based on “methodological and ethical concerns.”

According to them, “GenAI as simulated intelligence is incapable of meaning-making; qualitative research should remain a distinctly human practice; there are established manifold harms of GenAI, especially to the environment and workers in the Global South.”

A statement on Monday said the decision, reached during a meeting of more than 400 scholars from over 30 countries in October 2025, would be formally presented during a webinar scheduled for December 11.
