Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

With the 2023 finals approaching, Dr Birt believes that Australia needs to grow its grassroots esports industry to be competitive at an international level. Currently, talented Australian esports athletes are being recruited by overseas teams, leaving a gap in the local industry. Dr Birt suggests building a local esports ecosystem, similar to the AFL or NRL, and addressing the issue of too much screen time in high-performance training. With over 250,000 participants in the 2021 virtual event, Dr Birt believes the Gold Coast is well-suited to host an IOC esports week in the future.
